Abstract

Ego State Therapy (EST) is a powerful therapeutic approach that can be seamlessly combined with hypnosis. EST is based on the idea that personality consists of more or less separate parts. Working with these parts with the assumption that they each serve a function for the individual, can help resolve deeply rooted internal conflicts. The technique of interviewing ego states, can reveal unconscious dynamics in conditions such as compulsions, addiction, neurotic or trauma-related anxiety, and dissociation. EST can offer insights and solutions to conflicts, such as between the desire to quit unwanted habits or reactions and the persistent nature of those undesired habits. I will address how to introduce the idea of states to the patient, and how to individualize the therapeutic procedures. I will also address the challenges of working with “negative transference”; ego states who protect by being mute, avoidant, critical or furious.

Following the theoretical overview, there will be an opportunity for questions and answers, a group exercise on the theme of “opening doors”, or a brief demonstration.
